| January 7, 2010: “Trail of Dreams” Walkers Bring Attention to Immigrant Rights |
|
Four students are walking from Miami to Washington, DC to bring attention to the need for Congress to pass the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act. The four students, all immigrants themselves, stopped at my West Palm Beach office at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 7. These brave and dedicated young men and women serve as exemplary role models for their peers. Their 1,500 mile walk demonstrates great spirit, civic commitment, and the kind of idealism America has always been known for. I wish them the best of luck on their journey and hope to see them when they reach the Capitol Building on May 1. I am a proud co-sponsor of the DREAM Act, which provides a path to legal immigration status for college-bound students who have lived most of their lives in this country but do not have legal immigration status. I believe that our country benefits from supporting the development and education of our nation’s youth. Many of these young people arrived in this country with their parents at a very early age. They have grown up here, dedicated themselves to their education, and are becoming valuable and productive members of our society. |
