Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement regarding an attack on a synagogue in Jerusalem, which took the lives of four individuals, including three Americans, as well as left six people wounded:

“Today’s vicious attack on a Jerusalem synagogue is an affront to peace and our common humanity.  The four individuals murdered, Rabbi Moshe Twersky, Rabbi Aryeh Kupinsky, Rabbi Avraham Shmuel Goldberg, and Rabbi Kalman Levine, were faith leaders in their community.  It is truly a sad day when places of worship become the target of such acts of hate and terror.

“The people of Israel deserve to live in peace – free from fear and the perpetual threat of violence.  Today’s senseless crime, like the several deadly stabbings and vehicle incidents in recent weeks, will not be tolerated.  Extremism represents a growing danger to nations all around the world, and the United States will continue to stand with its ally Israel in the face of attacks on its borders and people.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the victims during this great time of sadness.  It is my sincere hope that their sacrifice and faith through example will bring the Israeli people together in spirit and healing.”

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
