Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (FL-20) made the following statement in support for H.R. 12, the Voter Empowerment Act (VEA):

“The right to vote is a pillar of our democracy, and yet, the fight to protect this basic right and ensure access to the ballot box continues.   That is why I was proud to join Rep. John Lewis (GA-5), House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5), Assistant Democratic Leader James E. Clyburn (SC-6), Rep. John Conyers (MI-13), Rep. Robert Brady (PA-1), and more than 170 Democrats as an original co-sponsor of H.R. 12, the Voter Empowerment Act

“Today, this pillar of democracy is consistently eroded by Republicans who insist on implementing policies that will make it more difficult for minorities, seniors, and college students to vote. In the wake of the recent commemoration of the 50th anniversary of ‘Bloody Sunday,’ we must remember and pay tribute to those courageous men and women who bravely took a stand, which sparked the conscious of our nation. Voting rights should be a bipartisan issue.  I urge the House Republican Leadership to bring this measure to the floor next week for consideration."

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
