Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement marking the 80th anniversary of the signing of the Social Security Act into law:

“For 80 years, Social Security has provided Americans with peace of mind. Hardworking men and women contribute to Social Security every paycheck, knowing that their earned benefits will be there for them when they need them.

“Today, nearly 60 million Americans, including over 4.2 million Floridians, depend on the monthly retirement, survivor, and disability benefits that they receive from their Social Security.

“As we celebrate 80 years of Social Security, we must focus on keeping the program strong for the future. It is the government’s responsibility to ensure that the promise of Social Security is kept, and that the money invested into the system is repaid in full, down to the penny.

“Unfortunately, Social Security remains a frequent target of Republican attempts to end the program as we know it. I continue to oppose misguided efforts to privatize the system or to raise the current retirement age. As a Member of Congress, I will do all that I can to ensure that Social Security is there for those who have paid into the system, as well as the next generation of beneficiaries.”

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
