Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement on the passing of former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon:
“It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that I learned of the passing of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. He was a man of great courage and resolve, and his legacy will not be forgotten.
“For more than five decades, Prime Minister Sharon stood at the helm of the State of Israel as both a military leader and a statesman. His extraordinary vision and commitment to security and peace strengthened Israel, and undeniably transformed the Middle East.
“Prime Minister Sharon was a great friend to the United States. I am honored to have known him as a friend and to have worked with him to strengthen the unbreakable bond between our two nations. During these challenging times, the American people stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the people of Israel.
“I offer my profound sympathies and deepest condolences to Prime Minister Sharon’s family and the Israeli people during this great time of sadness.”
