Representatives Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) and David Schweikert (R-AZ), Co-Chairs of the Congressional Tunisia Caucus, released a joint statement on the Tunisian government’s official adoption of the country’s new constitution:

“It is indeed a bright day for the Tunisian people.  The overwhelming passage of Tunisia’s new constitution into law represents a significant step forward on the path to a strong, inclusive, and sustainable democracy.  After two long years of negotiations, I applaud Tunisia’s political leaders for working to adopt a constitution that reflects a critical commitment to the freedom of belief and protection of minority rights.  Tunisia continues to be a great friend to the United States, and I am proud to support this partnership as Co-Chair of the Congressional Tunisia Caucus during this momentous period of transition,” said Congressman Alcee L. Hastings.

“Tunisia’s new constitution, which reflects freedom of conscience and belief, and equality between the sexes, stands as a model for the region. I hope this day is remembered in stark contradiction to the violence and turmoil that befell North Africa and the Middle East following uprisings in 2011,” said Congressman David Schweikert.

“While there is more work to be done in strengthening Tunisia’s newly minted democracy, today marks a promising step and I look forward to working with the Tunisian Government and to strengthen U.S. - Tunisian relations,” further added Schweikert.

Representatives Hastings and Schweikert registered the Congressional Tunisian Caucus in the summer of 2013. Since its inception, the Caucus has worked to inform policy makers of the democratic transition in Tunisia while strengthening bilateral relations between the United States and Tunisia.
