Today, Congressman Alcee L. Hastings released the following statement after receiving the Florida Lawmaker of the Year award from the League of Southeastern Credit Unions:
“It is my great privilege to accept the League of Southeastern Credit Unions award for Florida Lawmaker of the Year. Credit unions are critically important to our nation’s economy and serve as a primary source of consumer credit for millions of Americans, especially in underserved and rural areas, as well as for many local businesses.
“Be it affording a home, starting a new business, or simply providing for their families, the League of Southeastern Credit Unions empowers Floridians and Alabamians alike. Our nation faces many pressing challenges, from creating and supporting jobs to investing in the opportunities of tomorrow. When it comes to increasing economic opportunities for middle class and working poor Americans, I believe that equitable access to credit for all is key. This is especially true for underserved and rural communities which may not otherwise be able to obtain affordable credit and fully achieve their economic potential.
“I am committed to doing everything in my power to maximize access to credit for consumers in a manner that is fair and equitable, and supporting a new era of prosperity across America. I am honored to accept this award and remain focused on making it easier for all American families to succeed.”
