Hastings’ Statement on 2 Million Americans Losing Emergency Unemployment Benefits
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement after the number of Americans cut off from Emergency Unemployment Insurance reached 2 million:
“Today, the number of Americans who have lost their emergency unemployment benefits reached 2 million. Sadly, it is no surprise that House Republicans are marking this occasion with their 50th vote to undermine health care reform. It is clear that their priorities are truly backwards.
“Every week, approximately 72,000 Americans lose their emergency unemployment benefits. These are hardworking people looking for jobs. But rather than lend a hand in support, House and Senate Republicans have turned away and not looked back.
“Callously refusing to extend unemployment benefits may temporarily trim the deficit, but it is a short-sighted and foolish decision that will hurt our economy and this nation. Congress must act immediately to restore this vital lifeline.”
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
