Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement commemorating Memorial Day, which falls on May 26, 2014:

"On Memorial Day, we remember the brave men and women who have fought and died in defense of our country. As we pay tribute to the millions of Americans that have served in the armed forces throughout our nation’s history, let us honor their courage, sacrifice, and dedication to preserving the freedoms we so often take for granted.

“We must also remain committed to protecting the rights of all veterans, active duty members of the armed forces, and their families. As our troops come home from conflicts overseas, the need for veterans’ services across the nation will continue grow. Many veterans have already faced difficulty navigating the Veterans Administration’s (VA) health care, disability, education, and job placement services. We must ensure that these services are accessible to those who need them.

“I am committed to serving each and every one of my constituents returning home from deployment, and indeed every American veteran, as they access the services and benefits they rightly deserve.  This Memorial Day, I proudly join with Americans here at home and abroad in honoring the service members and veterans that keep our country strong.”

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
