Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement marking the ninth anniversary of Caribbean-American Heritage Month:
“The United States and the nations of the Caribbean have grown and prospered alongside each other for generations. This month, I am pleased to pay tribute to the countless Caribbean-Americans that have contributed to the development of the United States, and the generations of Caribbean-Americans that have called America home.
“Throughout our nation’s history, Caribbean-Americans have been involved in all facets of American society – from science and education, to business and the arts. Florida is home to the largest population of Caribbean-Americans in the country, and I am proud to represent a district with such a rich and diverse cultural identity.
“Our nation’s strength comes from its diversity and this month’s celebration clearly illustrates how each generation leaves the United States a more vibrant and tolerant place. As we mark National Caribbean-American Heritage month, let us recognize the many contributions that Caribbean-Americans have made in shaping and strengthening our country.”
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
