Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement marking the 70th anniversary of the Allied invasion of Normandy, known as D-Day:
“I join with people around the world in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of D-Day. Today, we honor the brave men and women that made Allied victory in World War II possible.
“The names of the Normandy beachfronts of Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword are to this day known as hallowed places, where at great cost, Allied forces took the first steps towards victory against tyranny. With great sacrifice, courage, and determination, our combined forces advanced, liberating Western Europe and defeating the Nazi regime.
“We owe much to this greatest generation. I am honored to pay tribute to the courageous heroes of D-Day who fought and died to secure a world free from the oppression of intolerance, where human dignity and liberty are valued above all. As we mark this solemn anniversary, let us honor their sacrifice and recommit ourselves to the fight against injustice across the globe.”
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
