Today, Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement after President Barack Obama announced the creation of a task force to promote the health of honey bees and other pollinators:

“I am pleased that President Obama is taking the issue of pollinator loss seriously. Pollinators such as bees, birds, bats, and butterflies are vital to our food supply and the U.S. economy at large. The loss of pollinators has been severe and persistent in recent years and must be addressed.

“I am a proud to champion this issue in Congress, and along with Rep. Jeff Denham (R-CA) recently introduced H.R. 4790, the Highways BEE Act. Prioritizing the creation of new habitat for pollinators is critically important and will be central to any national strategy to protect pollinators. Congress should pass this common-sense and cost-free bill right away.”

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
