The Congressional Homelessness Caucus, in conjunction with the office of Congressman John Conyers, will host an important briefing tomorrow on violence against the homeless. The briefing will take place on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at 2:00 PM in room 2237 of the Rayburn House Office Building.

The distinguished panel of speakers will include Susan Sarandon (actress/activist), David Pirtle (Survivor of Violence, National Coalition for the Homeless), and Tom Morgan (Director, Storied Streets).

Since 1999, the National Coalition for the Homeless (NCH) has documented more than 1,437 acts of violence against homeless individuals, 375 which resulted in death. H.R. 1136, the Violence Against the Homeless Accountability Act of 2013, is currently pending before Congress and would amend the Hate Crime Statistics Act to include crimes against the homeless in the crime data collected by the Attorney General.

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
