Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement in commemoration of Independence Day:

“Two-hundred, thirty-eight years ago, a group of delegates who shared the belief that all men are created equal, signed a document that forged one of the greatest democracies in the world.  This Fourth of July, we come together once again to celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the birth of our great nation.

“I would like to take this opportunity to recognize all our active-duty military personnel, veterans, and their families for their valiant service and countless sacrifices to keep our nation safe.  Recently, we celebrated the 5th anniversary of the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill, which stands as a renewed commitment to helping the brave men and women who have served our country prepare for their futures after military service and provide for their families.

“As we gather with our loved ones in communities large and small, let us remember that the principles of freedom, justice, and equality that unite us are stronger than the differences that divide us.  Have a safe and happy Independence Day!”

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
