Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement on the escalation of violence in Israel and the Gaza Strip:

“I am deeply troubled by the escalation of violence in Israel and the Gaza Strip. Hundreds of rockets have been fired into Israel from Hamas-controlled Gaza in the past week. No country should be expected to tolerate these kinds of constant indiscriminate attacks against its people, and Israel has every right to defend its citizens and borders.

“The fact that Hamas has fired nearly 400 rockets into Israel in the last three days is unacceptable. Hamas must bring an immediate end to these and all other attacks against Israel.

“I am also truly saddened by the loss of innocent civilian life. It is my hope that leaders in the region will come together to bring an end to Hamas’ unwarranted aggression and reach an agreement that will set both sides on a path towards peace.”

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
