Hastings Statement on 79th Anniversary of the Social Security Act
Today, Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement marking the 79th anniversary of the signing of the Social Security Act into law:
“For 79 years, Social Security Income (SSI) has offered financial security and peace of mind to millions of Americans. In Florida’s 20th district alone, nearly 120,000 thousand people receive more than $1.5 billion in Social Security benefits every year. SSI is a critical support system for them and millions of other Americans, and is also a primary source of income for a majority of elderly Americans and disabled veterans.
“I continue to aggressively defend Social Security against Republican attempts to privatize our nation’s primary safety net. I also strongly oppose their efforts to institute a chained formula that ties benefits to the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Both of these efforts would harm millions of America’s most vulnerable citizens, leaving their retirement savings in the hands of the very same investment funds and banks that nearly destroyed our economy, just a few years ago. As a Member of Congress, I will do all that I can to protect Social Security for beneficiaries and those who have contributed to the system.”
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
