Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement in commemoration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and the National Day of Service, which honor the life and legacy of the civil rights leader:
“We are reminded often of the leaders that have come to shape the outlook for progressive initiatives that ultimately serve to carry our nation and the world into a more humane, equitable position than what they found. Few can argue the tremendous impact that one such individual, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., had in this regard, and we use this national holiday to symbolize the importance of the Civil Rights movement annually.
“Dr. King’s message of peace, commitment to nonviolent protest, and unwavering support for equality for all has inspired many. However, we see that today there is still much to be done in the realization of his dream.
“Attacks on legislation such as the Voting Rights Act and the increasing attention being paid to disturbingly disproportional acts of police aggression on people of color have reminded us that the work is far from done. We must remain vigilant against developing threats in the ongoing struggle to end discrimination and prejudice in America.
“Disparities in education, employment, wealth, and social capital continue to persist among American communities of color, as millions continue to struggle with finding meaningful paths to the American Dream.
“Let us look to today as inspiration in striving to realize Dr. King's dream."
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
