Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement in recognition of Women's History Month:
“Each year during the month of March our nation observes Women’s History Month by celebrating the achievements and contributions made by women to our country, as well as the world. This March, let us remember those women who have helped pioneer our democracy and who, not only as mothers, daughters, and sisters, but as veterans, business leaders, and public officials, have successively assisted in building our great nation and invigorated our communities.
“Women today continue to follow the example of strong women leaders such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Amelia Earhart, Rosa Parks and numerous more. From Susan B. Anthony’s struggle for women’s suffrage to Lilly Ledbetter’s fight to gain fair pay, great strides have been made towards women’s equality in our society. And yet, while much progress has been made, many challenges in the fight for gender equality remain. For over 20 years, I have proudly supported legislation critical to the continued expansion of women’s rights.
“As we commemorate the contributions and leadership of women this month, it is important that we also renew our efforts to address discrimination against women in all its forms. We must continue to support legislation that mandates paycheck fairness, invests in employment opportunities for women, supports fair maternity and family leave policies, and raises the minimum wage. Together, we must commit to ending discrimination once and for all. This month I urge you to join me in paying tribute to the generations of women whose leadership, service, and accomplishments have proved invaluable to our nation.”
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
