Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement regarding the 50th Anniversary of the Head Start Program:

“Investing in the education of our nation’s youth builds stronger families, stronger communities, and a stronger nation.  Since its inception, Head Start has served more than 32 million children and their families in urban and rural areas all over the country.

“I am extremely proud of all the Head Start centers around the country that work with families to ensure they have the means to obtain health insurance, provide services for children with disabilities, adequate housing, and job training. Every child in America should be afforded an equal opportunity to succeed, regardless of what neighborhood they live in or how much money their parents make.

“It is my sincere hope that my Republican colleagues will abandon their plans for critical cuts to this valuable program and work with House Democrats to close the educational opportunity gap."

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Democratic Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
