Hastings Urges All Floridians to Prepare for the 2015 Hurricane SeasonCongressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement regarding the 2015 hurricane season, which begins on June 1st and ends November 30th: “Today marks the beginning of the 2015 hurricane season. This year, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting below-normal hurricane activity, with a seventy percent chance of 6 to 11 named storms. As we enter this period of storm activity, it is imperative that all Floridians be prepared should a hurricane make landfall. “While NOAA’s prediction of a below-normal season may be welcomed news, we must not become complacent in our preparation. As residents of South Florida remember all too well, the 1992 hurricane season was also a below-normal season, with only seven named storms forming – yet one of those storms was Hurricane Andrew, a Category 5 Major Hurricane that devastated the region. “A hurricane can be a destructive and often unpredictable force. Nothing can match thorough preparation to meet the challenges that a hurricane making landfall presents. I will continue to work closely with federal, state, and local agencies to ensure that the appropriate resources are available in the event of a hurricane striking our coast. I urge everyone to have a plan in place and be prepared should a hurricane make landfall.” For additional information on the 2015 hurricane season, please visit Hastings’ official website at www.alceehastings.house.gov.
