Today, Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement marking the 20th anniversary of the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin:

“I pause today to honor the life of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. Prime Minister Rabin bravely risked everything in search of a long-lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians, and his legacy of service to the Israeli people speaks for itself.

“I am reminded that when Prime Minister Rabin was shot, he was leaving a rally for peace at the Kings of Israel Square. In his pocket were the lyrics to Shir Lashalom, meaning “Song for Peace."

“Twenty years after his assassination, and under the shadow of a wave of terrorism currently striking at the people of Israel, let us come together in condemnation of violence and strive to realize Prime Minister Rabin’s vision for long-term peace. I stand with the people of Israel in remembrance of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, a man who I was honored to call my friend.”

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
