Congressional Homelessness Caucus Holds Briefing on the State of Homelessness in America
On Thursday, April 28th, the Congressional Homelessness Caucus, Co-Chaired by Representatives Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) and Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX), hosted a briefing on the state of homelessness in the America. The Caucus was joined by representatives of the National Alliance to End Homelessness, which earlier this month released its annual report, the State of Homelessness in America. The report can be found here: http://www.endhomelessness.org/library/entry/SOH2016.
“I was pleased to work with my colleague Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson to host the second Congressional Homelessness Caucus briefing of 2016. It is fitting that our conversation focused on the state of homelessness, and particularly the areas in which our response to homelessness has been lacking. Working together, Congresswoman Johnson and I recently submitted requests to the House Appropriations Committee to fully fund each of the 24 programs included under the umbrella of the Interagency Council on Homelessness, and to expand upon our response to family homelessness in America. With adequate resources, we can end homelessness in America,” said Congressman Alcee L. Hastings. “I want to thank the National Alliance to End Homelessness for their continued work in this area, and will continue to prioritize efforts in Congress to end homelessness once and for all.”
“In 2015, more than half a million people experienced homelessness on a given night. We have made progress on a national level and that number has decreased,” said Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson. “Unfortunately, the State of Homelessness in America showed that despite an improving economy, more families and individuals are vulnerable to homelessness especially in the 16 states that reported an overall increase in homelessness. This is another reason why Congressman Hastings and I requested full funding for the homelessness programs under the Interagency Council on Homelessness. I thank Congressman Hastings for working on this issue with me and the National Alliance to End Homelessness for their commitment to preventing and ending homelessness in America.”
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Democratic Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
