Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement marking Yom Ha'atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day:

“I am delighted to mark the 68th anniversary of the creation of the modern State of Israel. Today, we celebrate Israel’s remarkable growth and the special relationship enjoyed between our two countries.

“For 68 years, Israel has stood as an example of democracy and freedom in a region often marred by violence and oppression. Our nations share many values, from democratic principles to the freedom of religion. Together, we have worked hand-in-hand to develop new technologies, innovations, and medical advancements that have reverberated across the globe.

“Yet too often, Israel’s very right to existence is questioned on the world stage. I have travelled to Israel and the surrounding region many times as a Member of Congress, and have seen first-hand the threats of indiscriminate rocket attacks, terror tunnels, and lone-wolf terrorism. Now, under renewed threat from a global surge in anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism, including efforts to boycott, divest, or otherwise isolate Israel, it is more important than ever that we stand in unity with our greatest ally.

“I will continue to do all that I can in Congress to ensure that Israelis have a secure and peaceful homeland. As Co-chair of the Democratic Israel Working Group, I am pleased to mark this Yom Ha’atzmaut and extend to the people of Israel my best wishes on the 68th anniversary of Israel's Independence Day.”

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
