Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement regarding the indictment of former police officer Raja in the shooting death of Corey Jones on October 18, 2015.

“ Yesterday’s indictment of former police officer Nouman Raja in the fatal shooting of Corey Jones is a welcome development as the community works hard to rebuild the trust between citizens and law enforcement,” said Hastings. “Corey was a beloved member of his community and his death is a tragic reminder of why it is imperative that law enforcement agencies implement operating procedures that ensure these tragedies never happen again. To that end, I was proud to introduce the Corey Jones Act of 2016, which would make certain that law enforcement agencies no longer allow undercover officers to engage in routine traffic stops,” Hastings continued. “The pain and loss felt by not only the Jones family, but our community more generally, should not be in vain, and therefore, we must all work together to ensure that such tragedies never happen again.”
