Today, Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement marking the one-year anniversary of the mass shooting at Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston, South Carolina:

“As we look back on the one-year anniversary of a tragic shooting that took nine lives at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church in Charleston, South Carolina, another act of gun violence ending in tragic loss of life is once again on the forefront of America’s conscience.

“Emanuel A.M.E. has played a key role in major periods of American history, including the antebellum South and the Civil Rights Movement. Founded in 1816, the church has survived tragedies spanning from arson attempts to a devastating earthquake. Yet, it was a Wednesday night Bible study that changed the church forever.

“As a nation, we continue to see ignorance, hatred, and intolerance give way to violence, leaving countless innocent victims in its wake. These senseless acts of violence can never be understood, but we must find strength in knowing that justice will ultimately prevail.  And we must do all that we can to prevent future tragedies."
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
