Hastings’ Statement on One-Month Anniversary of Orlando Mass Shooting
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement marking the one-month anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida:
“As we mark the one-month anniversary of the worst mass shooting in our nation’s history, Republicans in Congress continue to block important legislation to prevent future tragedies. Americans are demanding action, and Democrats continue to answer their calls by advocating for common sense gun control reforms that will keep us safe without sacrificing the rights of gun owners.
“Just last week, House Republicans pulled a watered-down gun violence measure endorsed by the National Rifle Association (NRA) in a cowardly capitulation to fringe members of their own party. It’s time for Republicans to remember who they work for.
“Following Orlando, Members of Congress condemned the attack and the House of Representatives held its usual moment of silence, and then went back to business as usual. I think we owe it to the victims of this horrific attack, the countless attacks that have come before it, and the tens of thousands of individuals in this country that lose their lives to gun violence every year to stand up and say ‘no more silence.’
“I join with millions across our nation today in paying homage to the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting and reaffirming my commitment to passing meaningful gun control legislation in Congress.”
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
