Hastings’ Statement on Women’s Equality Day
Today, Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement marking the 96th anniversary of the adoption of the 19th Amendment, which extended voting rights to women, and Women’s Equality Day:
“Today we celebrate the 96th anniversary of the 19th Amendment and Women’s Equality Day, which is dedicated to the women and men who fought against discrimination based on sex at the voting booth. We also must recognize the work that remains to be done despite the many strides that have been made since then.
“Women now account for almost half of our nation’s workers, and have risen to top positions in public and private offices. Despite these and countless other contributions and successes by our nation’s women, they still face a wage gap of 79 cents to every dollar paid to men.
“As a proud supporter of House Democrats’ When Women Succeed, America Succeeds agenda, I continue to do all that I can in the fight for gender equality. I join those who advocate for equal pay for equal work, paid sick days, paid family leave, expanding affordable child care, and retirement security. In supporting American women workers, we are supporting American families and the American dream.
“In honor of Women’s Equality Day, let us ensure that women succeed through rededicating ourselves to this cause, because when women succeed, America succeeds.”
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
