(Fort Lauderdale, FL) Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement congratulating the people of Georgia on last week’s parliamentary elections:
“I congratulate the people of Georgia on their parliamentary elections of October 8th. While there were occasional reports of election-based violence, it is clear that polling was well-administered and conducted in a fair, open, and competitive process. A fundamental function of any democracy is to ensure that all qualified citizens are allowed to freely exercise their political franchise. Tens of thousands of non-partisan observers monitored this year’s election in Georgia, highlighting the nation’s commitment to the democratic process.
“As President Emeritus of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, I had the opportunity to lead an election observation mission to Georgia in January 2008, as well as other missions in Azerbaijan, Belarus, and Ukraine in the past. Georgia continues to lead as a democratically transitioning country of the region, and I look forward to continued progress in future elections.”
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
