Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement after the Trump Administration rescinded protections for transgender students enacted by President Obama:
“In rescinding guidance issued by President Obama’s Administration, President Trump has abandoned transgender students across the country. I am deeply disappointed by the Administration’s retraction of these important protections that benefit nearly 150,000 transgender students.
“This is not a states’ rights issue as the White House has falsely claimed. Title IX prohibits all public schools from discriminating against students based on sex. All students, regardless of sex or gender, are deserving of equal protections under the law, period. The White House should not be picking and choosing which students are deserving of federal protections.
“Passing the buck under the false pretense of 'states’ rights' is not acceptable leadership. President Trump continues to abdicate his responsibilities as President. In recent years, great progress has been made in fully recognizing the equal rights due to the LGBTQ community, and I will continue to push for more progress, not less.”
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Democratic Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
