Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement after hosting a Congressional Briefing this week on Protecting Dogs and Cats from Human Consumption in the United States. Joining Hastings at the briefing were: Marc Ching, Founder & CEO of the Animal Hope & Wellness Foundation, Valarie Ianniello, Executive Director of the Animal Hope & Wellness Foundation, Shannen Doherty, American Actress, Producer, and Author, and Nickolaus Sackett, Attorney & Social Compassion in Legislation Board Member.
This month, Hastings introduced bipartisan legislation with Reps. Vern Buchanan (R-FL), Dave Trott (R-MI), and Brenden F. Boyle (D-PA), to protect dogs and cats from being slaughtered for human consumption in the United States. H.R. 1406, the Dog and Cat Meat Trade Prohibition Act of 2017, will provide protection to dogs and cats in the 44 states that currently have no law prohibiting the shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or donating of dogs or cats to be slaughtered for human consumption.
“The briefing shined a light on the dog and cat meat trade here in the United States. H.R. 1406 reflects our society’s values, and imposes penalties to ensure that individuals involved in this horrific practice are held accountable,” said Congressman Alcee L. Hastings. “I was happy to host a distinguished panel of experts for this important discussion. This bill allows the United States to stand in unity with other countries that have made the dog and cat meat trade illegal, while also giving the United States greater standing to urge other countries to end this brutal and inhumane practice once and for all.”
"Thanks to Rep. Hastings for leading this bi-partisan effort to ban dog and cat meat in the United States," stated Nickolaus Sackett of Social Compassion In Legislation. "As Americans we love our dogs and cats and H.R. 1406 is simply a codification of those values."
"Animal Hope and Wellness foundation is proud to be the leader in putting this legislation together. It is a stepping stone for our international work and will help in our fight against the global dog meat trade,” said Valarie Ianniello. “Marc and I were humbled to be on Capitol Hill again speaking up for the voiceless alongside Alcee Hastings and Shannen Doherty. And honored to also meet with Kevin McCarthy to bring the Dog and Cat Meat Trade Prohibition Act to his attention. Rep. McCarthy was shocked to learn that 44 states still allow for the killing and consumption of dog and cat meat."
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
