Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement after introducing a resolution, Celebrating the Importance of the 15th Anniversary of the Arab Peace Initiative as a Meaningful Effort by Arab Countries’ to the Commitment of Peace in the Middle East. (Please find a copy of the legislation attached.)
“I am pleased to introduce this resolution marking the 15th anniversary of the Arab Peace Initiative and commending those Muslim-majority Arab nations that have taken steps to improve bilateral relations with the State of Israel. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict unquestionably remains a major challenge, and the Arab Peace Initiative, adopted 15 years ago, represents a meaningful effort by Arab states to support peace.
“I believe the United States must stay actively involved in peace negotiations between the Israelis and the Palestinians, and urge all parties to continue open dialogue. With continued negotiation, this plan can serve as a foundation for normalization of bilateral relations between Israel and her neighbors. On this 15th anniversary, I hope the baseline set by the Arab Peace Initiative will continue to reinforce the desire for further regional security cooperation and stability.
“I would also like to congratulate my friend King Abdullah II and wish the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan the very best in taking over the Arab League Council Presidency.”
