Today, Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement marking Memorial Day:

“As we mark Memorial Day, let us join together to give thanks to the servicemen and servicewomen that have sacrificed for our country. As we honor their courage, we must reflect on the ideals for which they served and rededicate ourselves to upholding these quintessential American values.

“In recognizing those who have bravely served our country, we must acknowledge the many challenges facing veterans today. Although we have successfully cut veteran homelessness by half since 2010, veteran healthcare services are frequently overshadowed by long wait times and insufficient treatment. For others, education and workforce benefits are inadequate to support the transition back to civilian life. It is estimated that 20 veterans die by suicide each day, a figure that throws the failures of our veterans’ healthcare system into sharp focus. Rectifying these issues must take priority in the coming months of the 115th Congress.

“With almost 1.7 million veterans in Florida and 34,000 in my Congressional district, I am proud to work closely with the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA) hospitals in West Palm Beach and Miami, as well as local clinics and medical facilities to ensure the well-being of the Florida veterans community. Serving those who have served our country continues to be one of my greatest privileges.

“This Memorial Day, I proudly join all Americans in thanking those serving our nation, those who have served in the past, and honoring the memories of fallen heroes.”

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
