Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement on Hurricane Harvey:
“As the people of Texas continue to grapple with the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey, I offer my full support to the thousands of families coping with this tragedy. I join with so many around the country in keeping the people of Texas in my thoughts and prayers.
“The threats from this storm have not yet passed, and many of our fellow citizens still face immediate danger and the prospect of long-term displacement from their homes and communities. I thank the first responders and the ordinary citizens working day and night to save lives, as well as those working to keep emergency shelters available to those in need.
“When disasters strike, Americans stand together. The road to recovery from this storm will be long, and Congress must act swiftly to give local officials the resources they need to safeguard their communities and begin the painful process of rebuilding. This is a storm of historic proportions, and our response must be equally prodigious. When Congress reconvenes, we must prioritize passing a bipartisan emergency relief package that provides the necessary funding to recover from this horrific storm.”
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
