Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) has introduced H.Res.591, a resolution denouncing the ongoing violence against the Rohingya people of Burma and calling on the international community to do everything possible to help Bangladesh as it provides life-saving assistance to Rohingya refugees (Please find attached a copy of the resolution):
“The Rohingya people are victims of horrific atrocities at the hands of the Burmese army and government. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has rightfully described the ongoing violence as a `textbook example of ethnic cleansing,' as the Rohingya have been targeted for extrajudicial killings, forced disappearances, arbitrary detention, mass rape, and the burning of hundreds of villages. More than 580,000 people have fled from the northern Rakhine region of Burma to Bangladesh since late August.”
“This violence is appalling. Congress needs to clearly and definitively denounce these mass atrocities, and do everything possible to support Bangladesh as it provides life-saving assistance to refugees. I urge House leadership to bring my resolution to the floor for a vote without delay.”
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
