Hastings Votes to Condemn Iranian Human Rights Abuses
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement after voting in favor of H.Res.676, Supporting the rights of the people of Iran to free expression, condemning the Iranian regime for its crackdown on legitimate protests, and for other purposes. The resolution passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 415 - 2.
“Thousands of Iranians took to the streets over the past few weeks to protest economic repression at the hands of Ayatollah Khamenei‘s regime. This is one of the largest anti-corruption uprisings in Iran in recent memory, and it has been aimed directly at the Ayatollah’s repressive political establishment. In keeping with its record of human rights violations, the Iranian government responded by killing protestors and imprisoning thousands of its citizens. The government’s continued violation of human rights is unacceptable, which is why I cosponsored and voted for H.Res.676, which the passed the House of Representatives today. The U.S. must continue to stand against the Iranian regime’s corruption and support for regional terrorism.”
