Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement in response to President Donald John Trump’s first State of the Union Address:

“Throughout the first year of his Administration, President Donald John Trump has demonstrated that he is unable to govern. Having spent 25 percent of his Presidency at his private golf clubs - and who knows how much time ranting on Twitter - President Trump has abdicated his responsibilities to our country.

“The President’s policies speak for themselves – each more outrageous than the last. His $1.5 trillion deficit-exploding tax plan padded the pockets of his millionaire friends and stacked the deck against middle class and working poor Americans. His frequent disparaging comments about women, minorities, and LGBTQ Americans showcase his ignorant, misguided view of the world. All the while, he has actively sought to suppress an ongoing independent investigation into his own administration.

“We are just four months into the fiscal year, and yet, the Republican-run Congress has needed four short-term continuing resolutions to keep our country running. This is no way to govern, and the negative effects of relying on short-term continuing resolutions continue to cause immeasurable harm to our country.

“One evening of faux-bipartisanship does not erase the President’s failures over the past year. I do not believe for one second that the coming year will be any different. Tonight, President Trump further proved what we already know about him: he sees the Presidency as tool for self-aggrandizement. He sees himself as infallible, even as his policies jeopardize the wellbeing of the most vulnerable Americans.

“Congress must prevent another Republican government shutdown in just nine days, protect DREAMers and recipients of Temporary Protected Status (TPS), and provide gravely needed disaster relief. I call on my colleagues in Congress, Democrat and Republican, to turn their backs on this President’s divisiveness. Together, we can lead by example and put the American people first.”

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
