Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement marking Yom HaShoah, Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day:

“I join with my friends in the Jewish community in observance of Yom HaShoah. Today, we memorialize the millions of Jews murdered during the Holocaust and recognize the brave few who aided those fleeing persecution.

“Few nations acted as the systematic persecution of Jews spread across Europe. Many, including the United States, turned away Jewish refugees. As we face a resurgence of anti-Semitism and historic levels of displacement worldwide, it is imperative that we recognize the continued need to provide aid to oppressed people everywhere.

“In reflecting on this day, we are again reminded that we must always combat hatred and intolerance wherever it exists. To ignore the lessons of the Holocaust would be a betrayal to the victims, their families, survivors, and their descendants.”

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
