Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement after President Trump ordered military strikes against the Syrian regime, in response to the brutal chemical weapons attack on civilians in Douma:
“Last week’s chemical weapon attack in Douma, like the one carried out in April 2017 against the town of Khan Shaykhun, is an outrageous war crime perpetrated by the Assad regime. The use of chemical weapons requires a swift, strong, and deliberate international response.
“The President indicated tonight that he is prepared to sustain our response in Syria. For too long, Congress has sat idly by as the Executive Branch engages our military in numerous conflicts overseas through an Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF), which was enacted in 2001. This cannot continue! I call on the Speaker to bring an AUMF before the House of Representatives immediately.
“The United States must also hold Russia and Iran accountable for their support of the Assad regime, and perpetuation of the conflict in Syria.”
