Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement on the 2018 hurricane season, which begins today:

“Forecasters have predicted that this year’s hurricane season will again be above average. Given last year’s damaging storms, it is critical that all Floridians adequately prepare beforehand.

“Last year, Broward and Palm Beach Counties were luckily spared from direct hits by large storms. However, this week, we learned that an estimated 4,600 Puerto Ricans lost their lives as a result of Hurricane Maria. This tragic figure is a stark reminder of the danger posed by hurricanes.

“As we enter hurricane season, I will continue to work closely with federal, state, and local agencies to ensure that the necessary resources are available in the event of a hurricane affecting our region.

“My office has once again prepared a list of resources for the benefit of my constituents and South Floridians, including a preparedness checklist, contact information for national and state-wide emergency hotlines, and locations of emergency shelters. This information can be found on my official website: www.alceehastings.house.gov.  I urge everyone to take the necessary precautions to prepare ahead of time.”

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
