Today, Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL), along with Representatives Ted Deutch (D-FL), Lois Frankel (D-FL), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), and Frederica Wilson (D-FL), introduced a resolution honoring the City Commission of Lauderdale Lakes, Florida after it became the first city government to be comprised entirely of women of color (Please find attached a copy of the Resolution):
“The residents Lauderdale Lakes wisely choose five women of color to head their City Commission,” said Congressman Hastings. “This is just the start of a trend that I believe will continue long into the future, with women and people of color increasingly being entrusted to hold the highest positions in their communities. I wish Mayor Hazelle Rogers, Vice Mayor Beverly Williams, and City Commissioners Sandra Davey, Gloria Lewis, and Veronica Edwards Phillips, many more prosperous years for the City under their leadership.”
“By making history as the first city government of its size to be composed entirely of women of color, Lauderdale Lakes is setting an example for the rest of the nation to follow,” said Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz. “Residents of Lauderdale Lakes can feel confident that their city leaders will build a future where no one is left out or left behind.”
“The residents of Lauderdale Lakes made history when they chose women of color to fill their City Commission. These minority city leaders are bringing new and diverse ideas to help their residents and businesses thrive,” said Congressman Ted Deutch.
"Women of color have a proud and storied legacy of political engagement and activism in this nation. It is a privilege to recognize the five women who will head the Lauderdale Lakes City Commission. This is an historic achievement that sets an example for both women of color and communities across the United States. I am confident that they will serve Lauderdale Lakes with compassion, wisdom, and honor,” said Congresswoman Wilson.
