Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement in observance of Juneteenth, which commemorates the day that the last slaves in the United States were set free:
"Today, I join Americans across our nation in celebration of Juneteenth. This day commemorates the liberation of the last slaves in the United States after Union soldiers arrived to Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865, over two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This marked the end of institutional slavery and set the United States on a path towards equality and freedom for all.
“As we reflect on the past 153 years, let us never forget the toils of persecution, discrimination, and the trailblazers who paved the way towards a more perfect union. African Americans have made remarkable progress across the nation and the world, and can feel immense pride in how far we have come. Although we have made great strides, our work is not complete.
“On this day forward, let us recommit ourselves to the struggle for equality for all while breaking the chains of injustice that continues to infringe upon our communities. We must remain vigilant, united, and never grow weary in fighting to uphold our principles and values. In our communities, we must do more to support families, schools, and institutions to ensure their success for future generations to come. I hope that we will continue to be inspired by the joyous celebrations commemorating Juneteenth and the symbolism it holds for us all.”
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
