Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement on the 2018 Yulin Dog Meat Festival, which began today in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China:

“As the 2018 Yulin Dog Meat Festival begins, we must continue to shed light on the horrific treatment of animals subject to the dog and cat meat trade. I find it absolutely shameful that this festival and others like it still continue.

“It is time for Congress to consider my resolution, H.Res.401, which urges all nations to outlaw the dog and cat meat trade and to enforce existing laws against such trade.  This measure has been passed out of the House Foreign Affairs Committee favorably with the support of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle.  By passing this resolution, we can reaffirm America’s commitment to the humane treatment of our most beloved companions.

“I proudly stand with the millions of people across the globe and in China, who wish to see this festival come to an end once and for all. I also want to thank the countless activists who continue their tireless fight every single day in order to save and protect the voiceless.

“I will never waiver in my commitment in working to end the brutal and inhumane treatment and consumption of dogs and cats.  I sincerely hope that the House GOP leadership will stand with me, and bring my resolution to the floor without delay.”

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Democratic Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
