Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) will tour transportation and infrastructure improvement projects prioritized by the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). The MPO currently has programed $5.21 billion dollars’ worth of projects in Broward, including projects that Hastings helped secure funding for. Hastings will tour three project locations on Monday, August 20th, beginning at 1:00 PM. The Tour will begin at the Nob Hill Soccer Club Park, located at 10200 Sunset Strip, Sunrise, FL 33322. All of the projects are part of the Broward MPO’s Complete Streets Initiative. Complete Streets will create a network of bicycle and sidewalk facilities that will allow residents to safely and efficiently reach their destination.

1:15 PM:

Nob Hill Soccer Club Park/Sunset Strip Project – The Sunset Strip project was a $3.6 million dollar project funded entirely with federal funds. Completed earlier this year, a 4.4 mile segment of Sunset Strip was transformed from a four-lane road to a two-lane road with buffered bike lanes and wider sidewalks that enhance mobility and provide additional safety benefits for residents. This project is complete and open to traffic.

1:30 PM:

NW 31st Avenue/MLK Avenue Project – Two projects on NW 31st Avenue will promote safety and give residents additional access to educational facilities with new bike lanes. The project will add five-foot bike lanes in each direction and narrow lane width to promote both vehicle and bicycle improvements. The first 6.5 mile segment, running from Riverland Road to Commercial Boulevard, is currently under construction, and was funded entirely with federal funds programmed by the Broward MPO. The second segment, approximately 1.7 miles, runs from Commercial Boulevard to McNab Road, and was a project awarded as part of the MPO’s 2016 TIGER Grant application. Construction is expected to begin in 2020.

1:45 PM:

Hammondville Road Project – The Hammondville Road Project totals $7.3 million and is funded in part by a 2016 TIGER Grant award (approximately $3.8 million (is funded at the federal level.). The one-mile project will add seven-foot buffered bike lanes in each direction, reconstruct sidewalks to ensure they meet ADA standards, add lighting, and improve drainage. Construction is expected to begin in 2020.
