Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement in observance of Labor Day:
“This Labor Day, we honor the hardworking men and women who make this country great. America’s cities and heartland have been built on the backs of workers, from its skyscrapers to its silos. Every day, hundreds of millions of laborers work towards the goal of supporting their families and making this country better.
“I am proud to represent a state with the fourth largest economy in the nation. Florida has a GDP of close to a billion dollars, nearly that of the entire country of Mexico. We export to the rest of the world millions of dollars of fresh fruit, aircraft, electronics and other goods every single day. But we should also not forget that the rights of workers must be protected now more than ever, as the right to unionize and collectively bargain for wage growth are under attack. To all of the workers in Florida, know that I will continue to fight for these rights on your behalf.
“Congress will reconvene after Labor Day with many issues left to address, including job creation and funding the government past September. Democrats have put forth A Better Deal, which would create good-paying jobs for American workers and put an end to Republicans’ $100 billion unfunded tax cut for the wealthy. These are necessary changes that will only make our country stronger, and I look forward to working in Congress to advocate for their passage. Today, I encourage everyone to reflect on the work that has built our great nation, and the work that we have yet to do."
