Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement in response to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s suggestion of gutting Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security entitlements to make up for record-breaking GOP budget deficits:
“Republicans are at it again, suggesting that seniors, the disabled, and low-income Americans cover the costs of their out of control spending. Suggesting cuts to entitlements to cover record-breaking deficits is a gut-punch to those who rely on these critical programs, and it comes just months after Republicans exploded the deficit with their $2 trillion give away to corporations and the wealthiest people in our country.
“Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security provide life-saving care for millions of Americans every year. These programs cover hospital care, home health care, and skilled nursing, and provide workers with protections, so that they do not need to retire into poverty. These benefits are earned by a lifetime of hard work and playing by the rules. It is ridiculous to suggest that they would be used so that millionaires and corporations that outsource American jobs can get richer.
“The people of South Florida need these benefits. I will never vote to weaken them, and will continue to push back against any irresponsible and misguided effort to do so.”
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Democratic Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
