Hastings’ Statement on the Release of the Trump Administration’s Climate Assessment Report
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement on the release of the Fourth National Climate Assessment Report by the Trump administration:
“President Trump’s attempt to bury his own administration’s National Climate Assessment is as shameful as the report is shocking and makes clear that climate change is not a problem for the distant future, but a huge problem now. The message is loud and clear: The United States must urgently act on climate change.
“Year after year, we see higher temperatures, rising sea levels, deadly wildfires, and record-breaking hurricane seasons along our coasts. The report concludes that these climate-related impacts on U.S. agriculture, health, tourism, fisheries, energy, infrastructure, and businesses will only get worse, as well as more expensive and challenging. The assessment also points out that climate change will not affect all communities equally, with low-income communities and communities of color suffering the most.
“Climate change is not debatable, and no region of our country and no sector of our economy will be spared. While the Trump Administration and Congressional Republicans continue to deny that climate change exists, Democrats will use our new House Majority to take aggressive action to reduce climate pollution and help communities build their resilience to the impacts of climate change.”
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Democratic Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
