Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement on the convening of the 116th Congress:

“Today, the 116th Congress convenes with the new Democratic House taking swift action to pass two bills to reopen the government after a second week of the Trump shutdown.

“I am eager to get to work on behalf of the countless families who have gone ignored during eight years of Republican control of the House. The Democratic Majority will prioritize investments in education, housing, and infrastructure. We will work to ensure that every American has access to affordable healthcare, a livable wage, and 21st century workplace protections. We will promote racial justice, protect clean air and clean water, and access to the ballot box, and we will do whatever we can to reassert Americas role as a leader and moral force across the globe.

“Starting today, House Democrats will serve as a check on the reckless policies of the President’s administration. For two years, House Republicans stood idly and watched as the President worked against the interests of our nation, by promoting policies predicated on intolerance and apathy, while lurching from crisis to crisis. Today, the House will assert itself to hold this administration accountable.

“As Democrats take control of Congress, we will strive for bipartisanship and common ground where we can – and will stand firm where we must.  As we debate our differences, we will remain steadfast in working to unite, not divide our country and are prepared on day one to get the job done for the American people that we are so privileged to serve.”
