Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement after voting to end President Trump’s 3rd government shutdown and reopen the federal government in entirety:

“Today, as one of my first actions in the 116th Congress, I worked with my colleagues in the Democratically-controlled House of Representatives to pass legislation that would reopen the federal government in entirety. The package passed by House Democrats is a common sense solution to ending a crisis that should have never arisen in the first place.

“Two years into his administration, the President appears to have learned nothing about how to effectively govern this country. While controlling all three branches of government, President Trump’s Republican Party shut down the government on three separate occasions, costing us billions of dollars and causing irrevocable harm on countless families. More than 800,000 families are currently without their paychecks because of this disastrous shutdown, jeopardizing their health, safety, and financial stability.

“Today, House Democrats took steps to open the government and usher in a new era of leadership with greater transparency and accountability. The House of Representatives will reassert its role and serve as a check on the reckless policies of the President’s administration, and we will work to make our country more inclusive and more reflective of the values we hold.”
