Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement on National Gun Violence Awareness Day:
“On National Gun Violence Awareness Day, I join with courageous Americans across the country in pledging to continue to do everything I can to protect our places of worship, schools, families, and communities from the horrors of gun violence.
“Families across Florida live every day with the pain and loss caused by gun violence, while tens of thousands of Americans continue to lose their lives to gun violence every single year. Marking National Gun Violence Awareness Day just days after a horrific shooting that shattered the Virginia Beach community is a somber reminder that there is no time for inaction.
“It has been over 100 days since House Democrats passed H.R.8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act and H.R. 1112, the Enhanced Background Checks Act. I find it completely unacceptable that our communities keep being rocked by tragedy after tragedy, while an overwhelming majority of Americans and gun owners support universal background checks. The bottom line is this: If a person cannot pass a background check, they are unfit to buy a firearm. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to not wait another day and act now!”
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Vice-Chairman of the House Rules Committee, Chairman of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
