Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement in observance of Labor Day:
“This Labor Day, we honor the American workers who represent the very foundation of our economy and our nation. Our country’s economy was built on the backs of workers, including immigrants. Working every single day to provide a better life for themselves and their families.
“I could not be more proud to represent a state with the fourth largest economy in the nation, which generates a GDP exceeding one trillion dollars. Our two largest industries, tourism and agriculture, place Florida’s economy at the forefront, because we are a state driven by a diverse workforce.
“In order to support our workers and their rights, House Democrats have put words into action. Nobody should face wage discrimination based on gender, race, or sexual orientation. No one should work more than one job, yet struggle to put food on the table. That is why, in the first 200 days of the 116th Congress, the Democratic House took the lead on passing three landmark bills – the Paycheck Fairness Act
, the Raise the Wage Act
, and the Rehabilitation for Multiemployer Pensions Act
- to close the gender wage gap, give workers a raise, and save the hard-earned pensions of more than a million retirees. As Congress reconvenes to take on a full legislative agenda after Labor Day, I will continue to advocate to protect and strengthen workers’ rights throughout Florida and across our nation.”
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Vice-Chairman of the House Rules Committee, Chairman of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
